Dream Sequence

Its not often that everything flows perfectly on a shoot.. like a dream. Philippa is my favourite subject to shoot. We know each other so well and instinctively seem to know what the other is thinking. This definitely helps the creative process. In this shoot, which was purely for pleasure, I was trying to capture the state of transition. Philippa has recently moved to London leaving friends and family behind. I wanted the photos to represent the kind of uncertainty that surrounds change. There is a sense of leaving something behind but also a positivity in moving forward.

Hollywood Portrait

I've been working on my own set of hollywood style portraits ever since I went to see the Glamour of the Gods exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery last year. Here is the first one. Thanks to Tom, my ever patient subject.

Any Offers?

"Remove prostitutes from human affairs and you destroy everything with lust".

I finished the design for the 'Love For Sale' poster. I decided to make it a cross between a film noir image and a calling card design... think it works.

I'm happy with the photograph I took and considering I am by no means a design expert I'm pretty pleased with my design work also.

Love For Sale

One of my most recent commissions was to photograph the beautiful Amelia Cormack for the publicity shots of 'Love For Sale'. Amelia will be on stage at Madame JoJo's, London performing her one woman show. The hit show features songs through the ages that demonstrate powerful females who happen to work the streets. For the shoot we went to the heart of Soho, an apt setting and one that proved challenging at night. More than one passer by was interested in Amelia's charms and we had a little audience accumulating as the evenings shoot progressed.

Below are some of the lyrics from the Cole Porter song 'Love For Sale' as a little teaser of the shows repertoire...

'The moon so long has been gazing down
on the warward ways of this wayward town
my smile becomes a smirk, I go to work'.

Self Portrait

I have a soft spot for the 1980's. Anyone who knows me well already knows this is true. Being born at the start of the decade means that I missed out on the political struggles of the time but somehow managed to soak up the popular culture. For this self portrait the I really wanted to capture the essence of that era, with my styling. The sharp focus shows every last detail of my face and texture of my shirt. Now I'm off to listen to some power ballads...

Playing in shadows

There is a certain time of the afternoon when the sun is lower and the most dramatic shadows are cast. Luckily Tom was around for an impromptu portrait. In the slatted shadow the portrait has a sinister feel.

First post of the new year.

Did anyone get to see This is England '88 on TV before Christmas? I loved the 3 part mini-series. Every shot was like a carefully crafted photograph and I was mesmerized by Lol's face. The scene when she was in the church was hauntingly beautiful. The close-up was on just her face in order to convey the anguish and sadness she was facing. I was reminded of the Sinead O'Connor video for 'Nothing Compares 2 U'. So much can be expressed through just a simple shot of the face. The shots below are my response to that. No obvious background, just the face and the emotion.

Little Women

Last week I had a great day shooting the rehearsal shots for the new musical production of 'Little Women'. Its the first time the musical has been performed in London and during the shoot I got a sneaky preview... It looks and sounds fantastic. 'Little Women' is showing at The Lost Theatre until 7th January. www.littlewomenthemusical.co.uk

Innocence

I think these images from my latest shoot have a painterly quality about them. This is mostly due to some of the posing and the neutral toned down colours of skin against the sheet. Thanks to Joseph for adding a touch of sexuality yet keeping an innocence to these shots

"High on diesel and gasoline.."

Inspired by Matt Irwin's photographic style to produce these spontaneous shots of pretty young thing Joe Larkowsky. Am I the only one who is reminded of Brett Anderson from Suede?

you don't do without it,
because you're beautiful"
