Tom goes Pop!

I have collaborated with Ryan Hodge Illustration to create a portrait for Tom inspired by the pop art of Andy Warhol.

The process was long but fun and started with a photoshoot in my Bow Studio where Tom provided us with some ridiculous facial expressions as requested.  We continued to shoot until we had at least four different portraits for the final image.

The hard work for me was over and it was time for Ryan to turn our chosen four into black and white before adding colour.  The colour was added in blocks so as to resemble a screen print in Warhol's signature style.

The Cult of Beauty

My most recent shoot takes inspiration from the aestheticism movement.  I've tried to make the photographs as painterly as possible, which is a style I'm becoming increasingly comfortable with, in order to reflect the ideas of the painters of the 1860s in search for new beauty.  While very often these painters would paint females I've chosen Gabriel Lindsay (represented by AMCK Models) whose soft features seem to fit well with the maxim 'Art for Arts Sake'.

Floating

As a sequel to my 'Drowning/Waving' series I took this portrait of Philippa trying to capture a serene and beautiful moment.

Geisha

Sometimes Becci and I work on projects just for fun.  This was one of those times.  Mishy had wanted to be transformed into a geisha for a long time.  Becci's wig making skills and make-up were on top form.  I used a little creative lighting to bring the whole look together.  Check out www.beccimapes.com for more of Becci's work.

Tomm

I've worked with Tomm Ingram on two different shoots and for this one we wanted to create something that would show his fragility and softer side.

Julienne Schembri

My portrait of Julienne Schembri who is currently starring in the UK and Ireland tour of Wicked The Musical.  It was an absolute pleasure to take Julienne's portrait.  There was a lot of love in the room.  Make-up and hair by Becci Mapes.

Fragility

I wanted this shoot with Philippa to represent fragility.  After losing weight through illness it seemed right that Philippa should be presented as both fragile and vulnerable yet willing to fight.

Carmen

Today I had the opportunity to work with the make-up artist Becci Mapes and muse Charlotte Chatfield.  We based our portrait on George Bizet's opera Carmen.  The story of the downfall of Don Jose, a naive soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen.

The Dreaming

I'll never tire of taking Philippa's portrait.  This image forms part of my Dream Sequence and is a technique that I've been trying to perfect over a number of different shoots.  It is a single exposure so relies largely on chance.  The idea was to show a confident woman moving forward and tentatively leaving the past behind.

Portrait of a sailor

A sailors life is an intriguing one.  What happens to the people they leave behind with just a portrait to cherish?

Nude

Philippa decided it was time to bare all for my camera.  I think the photo is beautiful and as always with Philippa the image is extremely feminine. It's important for me to make the result tasteful and I think we've both easily managed this here.

Cindy

For my latest night shoot Philippa and I decided to soot as if the image were a film still.  Both of us were totally impressed by the film 'Holy Motors' and decided that this shoot should be about taking on a character with a life story that was of course dramatic yet unexplained.  This is the latest in a very long list of colaborations with Philippa.  I look forward to many more in the new year.
